If you're in the mood for a swim, there are two 'Polar Bear Plunges' this week in Northern Indiana Lakes Country.

The 18th Annual Polar Bear Dip begins at 2 p.m. at the public beach on Hamilton Lake Friday, Dec. 31. It's sponsored by the Hamilton Lions Club and helps finance charitable works in the community.

On New Year's Day, take a plunge into the icy waters of Snow Lake at Dave's Lake Shack. The dip begins at 2 p.m. A free taco bar will be available following the plunge.

The toboggan at Pokagon State Park is offering extended hours during Christmas break.

Monday, Dec. 26-Thursday, Dec. 30, the 1,780-foot dual-lane toboggan will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Both New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are considered holidays, so it will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's closed on Christmas.

Following the new year, take advantage of the Friday Night Special: rent two toboggans, get one free! Toboggans rent for $10 per hour and hold up to four people. Children must be old enough to understand and abide by the rules.

The normal park admission of $5 per Indiana vehicle and $7 per out-of-state vehicle is charged daily.

Various Halloween celebrations will be held throughout Northern Indiana Lakes Country.

On Friday, Oct. 22, the Fremont Pumpkin Trail features storytelling, a shadow puppet theater, games, a pumpkin display and candy! Meet at the Fremont Public Library between 5 and 7 p.m.

The next evening, the fun moves to the Selman Timberframe in Commons Park in Angola. Between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., take a hayride, play some games, eat some candy and enjoy a campfire. On Monday, Oct. 25, the YMCA of Steuben County hosts a free Halloween Howl. Children up to age 12 are invited to attend this safe trick-or-treating event between 6:30 and 8 p.m. Costumes are encouraged.

Angola's trick-or-treating hours are between 6 and 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29. Go Angola hosts a special event downtown, with the Halloween Spooktacular between 5:30 and 7 p.m. A DJ will spin tunes at the courthouse between 7 and 8 p.m. and vintage horror movies will be shown.

On Saturday, Oct. 30, the town of Orland hosts trick-or-treaters between 5 and 6:30 p.m. A free carnival will be held at the American Legion from 6 to 8 p.m., with costume judging at 7:30 p.m. Hamilton's Annual Fall Festival offers fun all day long, including a chili cookoff, corn hole tournament and dance. Trick-or-treating is between 5 and 7 p.m.

Finally, Pokagon State Park hosts Ghost Tales and Other Stories of the Season at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30. Parents with younger children are encouraged to attend the earlier session. The cost is $1 per person. Refreshments will be served. The normal gate fee of $5 per Indiana car and $7 per out-of-state car will be charged.

Corporate Toboggan Speed Challenge set

The Angola Area Chamber of Commerce presents the first Corporate Toboggan Speed Challenge on Thursday, Dec. 2.

Registration includes two launches (with rides back up to the top of the hill) plus dinner for four, catered by the Potawatomi Inn. There are various sponsorship opportunities for your team. For more information, contact the Chamber at (260) 665-3512.

The 101 Lakes Trust is sponsoring its annual "Reflections" tour of an area lake. This year, Jimmerson Lake will be highlighted on Sunday, Aug. 15, beginning at 4 p.m.

Pontoon boat tours of the lake will leave from Nevada Mills. At 5:30 p.m., hors d'oeuvres will be served and a cash bar from Satek Winery will be available. A buffet at Club Paradise featuring locally-grown produce and entrees will be served at 6:45 p.m.

Ashley-Hudson team up for annual festival

The towns of Ashley and Hudson have teamed up to present the annual Ashley/Hudson Festival in Northern Indiana Lakes Country.

The events kick off Friday, July 30 with a 5K, 10K and two-mile walk at Hardy Park in Hudson. On Friday, Aug. 6, the fire department will have a 'water ball battle' at Smiley Park in Ashley. That's followed by a blue light parade at dusk.

Saturday, Aug. 7 starts off with a pancake and sausage breakfast at the Hudson Fire Department. The parade begins at 11 a.m. on Main Street in Hudson and continues onto State Street in Ashley. Music by 'Final Notice' starts at noon in the park. A street dance at the Hudson Fire Station begins at 5 p.m., followed by a hog roast on Main Street in Hudson.

Powers Church hosts summer service

The second summer service at Powers Church in Angola is set for Sunday, July 25 at 7 p.m.

The Top of Ohio Dulcimer Friends will share hymns using traditional folk instruments. A congregation sing-a-long will be included in their program.

The Powers Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1876 and has been restored to its original condition. The church features its original oak floors and wainscoting, wood stoves, pump organ, wallpaper and furniture.

Powers Church is located nine miles east of Angola, just north of U.S. Highway 20 on Old Road 1. The final summer service will be held Sunday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m.

Celebrate at the Vermont Settlement Festival

The town of Orland celebrates its designation as the birthplace of Steuben County at the annual Vermont Settlement Festival Saturday and Sunday, July 24 and 25. All events take place at the Orland Town Park on State Road 327.

The festival open Saturday with a pancake breakfast, sponsored by the Orland Lions Club. The Fawn River Run Cruise In begins at 8 a.m., followed by the opening of the arts and crafts displays and the primitive village. The parade starts at 11 a.m. and the Martin Brothers Blues Band performs between noon and 2 p.m. Cadillac Ranch closes the festival on stage between 2 and 4:30 p.m.

On Sunday, the mud volleyball tournament begins at 9 a.m. The Wasepi Bluegrass Gospel Singers will peform between 10:30 a.m. and noon. The pedal pull, for kids ages 3-12, will be held at noon, along with kids games. Bonafide performs on the main stage between 2 and 5 p.m.

Angola Balloons Aloft launches

A new and exciting event launches this weekend at the Tri-State Steuben County Airport.

Angola Balloons Aloft begins with opening ceremonies Friday, July 9 at 5:30 p.m. A mass launch from the airport, which leads to a hot air balloon competition flight, takes place between 6 and 8 p.m. The hot air balloon illumination will be between 9 and 10 p.m. (raindate is Saturday.)

On Saturday, July 10, an early-morning balloon competition will be held between 7 and 8 a.m. Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., there will be helicopter rides, airplane rides, skydivers, a military fly-by and the Parkview Life flight will be on hand. Another competition will launch between 6 and 8 p.m.

It's time for the annual Fremont Musicfest! On Friday, July 9 from 7 to 10 p.m., the ever-popular Spike & The Bulldogs will perform on the downtown stage. The Fremont Community Church hog roast begins at 5 p.m., while the car show begins at the elementary school at 4 p.m.

On Saturday July 10, residents and visitors alike will line the streets for the 11 a.m. parade featuring Grand Marshals Ken and June Crandall. Pokagon State Park's nature center will offer two special programs over Memorial Day weekend.

On Saturday, May 29, join in the late spring insect search at 2 p.m. Meet at the nature center program area for a short discussion on which six-legged wonders we are likely to encounter in late May, then join a safari searching for these fascinating creatures.

On Sunday, May 30, in honor of the Indy 500, there will be the Waxworm 500! Bring your fastest waxworm for some heated competition at the nature center program area, beginning at 2 p.m. An hour later, the resident turtles, frogs and snakes will be getting their bi-weekly meal. Stop by the nature center auditorium for an informal hour of observing the center's chores.

On Memorial Day, join the tradition that's gone on for eight years-a special walk of the nearby McClue Nature Preserve. Meet at the nature center parking lot at 7:30 a.m. to carpool. There we'll search for spring migrant birds in the near old-growth woodland preserve. Bring binoculars if you have some. Fireworks Extravaganza May 29 in Hamilton

The skies over Hamilton will be lit up Saturday, May 29 as Hog Hill hosts one of the Midwest's largest fireworks displays at dusk.

The cost to view the display from Hog Hill is $3 per person, with kids under 12 free. There will be special recognition given to veterans before the display.

Triathlon/Duathlon headed to Pokagon

A 10K run, 40K bike course and 1500 meter swim in Lake James highlight the 2010 triathlon at Pokagon State Park.

The race begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 22 with the swimming portion at the main beach. The bike portion follows out the main road of the park and onto lightly traveled country roads. The final leg is the 10K inside the park (a 5K is offered for the duathlon.)

A wetsuit for the swimming portion is highly recommended, due to the temperature of Lake James. The cost is $60 per participant, with an additional $25 if you register the day of the race. Packet pickup and registration is Friday, May 21 between 3 and 8 p.m. at the Potawatomi Inn, located inside the park.

ARTology exhibit headed to Potawatomi Inn

ARTology Exhibit: the Convergence of Art & Nature heads to Potawatomi Inn on Thursday, Feb. 25 for a two-month show. The exhibit opens with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on the 25th that's free and open to the public. There is no gate fee to attend the reception.

ARTology is an exciting collaborative exhibition presented by ACRES Land Trust and the Fort Wayne Museum of Art that emphasizes the convergence of the visual arts and the natural world. Twenty area artists were commissioned to respond to one of the 73 ACRES preserves in a variety of media and methods.

The closing night for the display is Wednesday, April 21. The exhibition will rotate throughout five counties through the end of October.

There will be no lions or tigers, but there will be bear at the Wild Game Feast at the Angola Elks Lodge on Saturday, Feb. 20.

Timbers Casual Dining in Angola recently received high marks from the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette restaurant critic Ryan DuVall.

Here's a sampling of his review: "As soon as my family was seated in the dark, rustic, log-cabin style steak and seafood restaurant on U.S. 20, a young woman took our drink orders and asked whether we wanted some buffalo-chicken dip to warm our bellies on a cold winter's night. And the dip, a special not listed on the men, proved to be a great choice. A warm basked of salty tortilla chips was what this dip of shredded chicken and a little celery blended in buffalo sauce, cream cheese and ranch dressing was eaten with."

DuVall aslo wrote, "When trying to select a fish to sample, my server again stepped up and recommended the pecan-crusted tilapia special over the menu staple walleye, grouper, salmon and tuna. The nutty breading became super crisp and buttery as it was pan sauteed, and that mix of flavors really worked with the mild fish, which was so moist I might even call it juicy."

Another sampling: "The house steak, however, was worthy of being the steak of choice and deserves to be on the menu permanently, even though it is simply a special now. It was an affordable special at just $9.99 too. This 8 to 10-ounce specialty cut called a chuck tender is similar to a sirloin and it is marinated in Maker's Mark bourbon. The steak was tender from end to end and has a pronounced bourbon flavor with just a touch of sweetness upfront."

Cross country ski trails open

The recent snow brought slick roads and school delays, but it also brought enough snow to open the cross country skiing trails at Pokagon State Park.

If you have your own skis, you may ski until 30 minutes before sunset any day of the week. If you need to rent skis, stop by the C.C.C. Shelter. Ski rental is $7 per hour per set for adults and $5 per hour per set for youth 15 and under. A driver's license is required as a deposit. Skiers with rented equipment must stay on the trails.

Park trails have variable skill levels so even the beginner can feel at ease while learning the sport. The beginner trail is the easy to moderate trail, which is scattered with slopes and curves. It provides a variety of terrain and runs through the woods. The advanced trail is four miles and challenges skiers with its steep and rugged areas, curves and uneven terrain. Take the Tony's challenge

Do you have what it takes to eat four pounds of food in 60 minutes? If so, your meal is free at Tony's Bistro in Angola.

Forty people have tried and to date, only six have succeeded in eating two one-pound Black Angus cheeseburgers plus two pounds of french fries, in less than one hour. Owner Jeff Wahl added, "We haven't had one woman try it yet."

In addition to bragging rights, those who succeed in eating Tony's Burger Challenge get their picture posted in the front of the restaurant on the 'Wahl of Fame.'

If you order the monster meal and don't finish it within an hour, the cost is $16. In order to get the free meal, you must finish every last bite on the plate.

Wahl purchased the former Tony's Pizza in July, 2009 and renamed the restaurant at 825 N. Wayne St. Tony's Bistro. "I'm a foodie," he said, "and I love watching those eating challenges on television. I told myself if I ever opened a restaurant, I would offer one of these challenges."

The 10-year tradition at the Cline Museum continues this Sunday as the Steuben County Historical Society hosts the annual Tree Festival and Christmas Open House between 2 and 4 p.m.

The event highlights trees decorated by members of the historical society. A six-foot 'Father Christmas' figure, along with a tree decorated with historic scenes of Steuben County, will be featured. In addition, 'Joyful Noise and Friends,' a dulcimer group from the Alvarado United Methodist Church, will perform.

The open house is the Historical Society's largest event. "This brings in the most people from throughout the county," Jim Penick, president of the historical society, told the Herald-Republican.

Wing Haven Nature Preserve hosts its annual sing-a-long Sunday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. The preserve is located a half mile west of State Road 127 on County Road 400 North. On Tuesday, Dec. 8, head to the Carnegie Public Library, 322 s. Wayne St., Angola, to enjoy the Trine Brass Ensemble. They will perform at 6:30 p.m. On Monday, Dec. 14, classic harpist and pianist Devon Haupt will put on a short concert.

Turning Point, the local homeless shelter, will host a concert Thursday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Steuben Community Center, 317 S. Wayne St., Angola. The Auburn Community Band will perform Christmas favorites. A free-will offering will benefit Turning Point. Trine University's Fabiani Theater will be the site of the Sweet Adelines Christmas concert on Sunday, Dec. 13. The Little River Chorus from Angola will join a Fort-Wayne based chorus for a 3 p.m. performance. Donations will be taken to benefit Santa's Helpers.

For a unique concert, visit the Fremont Public Library on Monday, Dec. 14 between 5:30 and 7 p.m. The Ellis Family Players will perform holiday favorites on the dulcimer. How fast can you go?

Bundle up, grab your family and friends and head to Pokagon State Park for the third annual Toboggan Time Trials on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. Last year's event drew 41 teams.

According to park naturalist Fred Wooley, the fastest team in 2008 reached speeds of 40 mph! The same family has won the past two years and is ready to defend their title.

Teams will compete for speed on the state's only refrigerated toboggan run in four divisions: youth (all team members under the age of 15); family and friends (members of any age, gender and relation); corporate (all team members from the same company) and costumed (members of any age, gender and relation). In the costumed division, the prize will be awarded to the best, most creatively costumed team.

All participants must use the park's toboggans, which cannot be altered in any way. The normal rental fee of $10 per hour per toboggan will be charged. A driver's license is required for renting.
Advance registration is not needed-register when you rent your sled. Once you are at the top of the tower, you may choose which track to ride. Speeds will be displayed on a radar gun near the bridge.

The park entrance fee is $5 per Indiana vehicle and $7 for out-of-state vehicles.

Walk the streets of Bethlehem

During the past 19 years, nearly 60,000 people have walked the streets of Bethlehem at Fairview Missionary Church's Bethlehem Marketplace. The free walk-through drama features a cast of more than 200 depicting the streets the day after the birth of Christ.

The entire production is held indoors on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 5 and 6. Hours are 1 to 5 p.m.

Fairview reports many positive comments about the Marketplace, including: "I have been to Jerusalem and this is the closest experience to the old city of Jerusalem I have ever seen" and "You enter into another time and world when you walk those streets."

The day after Thanksgiving is known as "Black Friday" and traditionally offers great shopping deals. For those early, early shoppers looking to re-fuel, Cahoots Coffee Cafe in Angola is offering a Black Friday Breakfast between 3 and 9 a.m.

Santa Claus is coming to town!

You better watch out, you better not cry. You better not pout, I'm telling you why.

Yes, it's time for sightings of the jolly old elf here in Northern Indiana Lakes Country. He's going to be busy visiting children in all corners of the county throughout the holiday season.

Santa arrives in downtown Angola, via a firetruck, on Friday, Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. He will hear hundreds of wishes between 6 and 8 p.m. at the Mason building on the southeast quadrant of the public square. The building opens at 5:30 p.m. and hot cocoa will be served.

The next evening, Santa makes his way to Hamilton. He will meet with kids at Gnagy Park following a 6 p.m. parade featuring horses and decorated wagons.

On Saturday, Dec. 5, Santa visits the Orland Community Center between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. He'll then hurry to make his way to The Outlet Shoppes at Fremont. Mrs. Claus will join him and pass out free gifts to children between 1 and 5 p.m. In the meantime, Santa will send one of his helpers to the Fremont Fire Barn between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The kids can have their pictures taken with Santa and make their own special craft.

As soon as we hear of more Santa stops here in Northern Indiana Lakes Country, we'll add them to the list!

We'll be searching for recently returning ducks and geese, then heading to the woodlands and marshlands for other late autumn birds. Bring binoculars or borrow a pair and meet at the Potawatomi Inn sundeck for this 90-minute walk.

Pine Cone Feeders, Friday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. Feed the birds from your tent, camper or home using this easy pine cone feeder. This is a make-it-and-take-it program.

Walk off the Turkey Trek, Saturday, Nov. 28 at 10 a.m. Work off that Thanksgiving meal by meeting at the Spring Shelter for a two-mile trek. We'll see the beautiful rolling meadows on this extended hike to the north end of the park.

A Walk through the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp, Saturday, Nov. 28 at 3 p.m. Gather at the nature center auditorium to discuss the CCC Company that worked in Pokagon from 1934 to 1942. This is a great program for history buffs or long-time visitors to the park.

Here in Northern Indiana Lakes Country, there are two craft shows in November that can quickly put you in the holiday mood. Trine hosting free concert

Trine University's jazz bands and university choir will entertain listeners with music in a variety of styles Sunday, Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. in the University Center’s Fabiani Theatre.

Halloween fun lasts for a full week in Northern Indiana Lakes Country. There is no shortage of activities for kids and adults alike!

The activities begin Saturday, Oct. 24 as the City of Angola sponsors "Halloween Fun" from 7 to 9 p.m. at Commons Park. The night features treats, games and hayrides, along with free pumpkins to the first 100 children.

Angola's downtown "Spooktacular" is Friday, Oct. 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the public square. Merchants will be handing out candy to the children.

The City of Angola's trick-or-treat hours are Saturday, Oct. 31 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sonlight Community Church hosts "Trunk or Treat" from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Don't forget your pets! The Angola Moose Lodge hosts trick-or-treating for cats and dogs Saturday, Oct. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. A costume contest begins at 6 p.m.

Storytellers LouAnn Homan and Steve Etheridge will perform at Pokagon State Park's C.C.C. Shelter at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. on Halloween. The "Ghost Tales and Other Stories of the Season" 6:30 p.m. performance is geared toward younger children. The fee is $1 per person, plus the $5 per Indiana vehicle and $7 per out-of-state vehicle fee.

Over in Orland, trick-or-treating takes place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Halloween. Fremont's town hours are 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31. The Outlet Shoppes at Fremont hosts trick-or-treating from 5 to 7 p.m. on Halloween.

Fremont's Public Library's "Pumpkin Trail" is set for Friday, Oct. 30 between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. The event features trick-or-treating, games, crafts and refreshments, along with storytelling and face painting.

The second annual "Fall Festival" in downtown Hamilton includes trick-or-treating from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31. A costume judging contest takes place between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Other fun activities throughout the day include games, crafts, pumpkin painting and a haunted house.

Now's the time to catch bluegills

"This is the time to catch a load of bluegills," according to Bob Bell, owner of Tri-State Bait and Tackle on Little Otter Lake in Fremont.

"Most people don't think of fishing when it starts to get cooler, but now's the time to load up before ice-fishing," he said. The best baits to use now include nightcrawlers and babycrawlers. "They start feeding heavy right before it gets cold," he said. "Worms are the way to go."

With the lake temperature falling to 60 degrees, Bell has witnessed the fish starting to come up from the bottom. He was on Lake James Tuesday and saw lots of fish near the top of the water.

Bell reports fishermen are catching bass and bluegill-"good size bluegill," he said.

If you have teenagers, then you've probably heard of the clothing store Aeropostale. A new 4,000-square-foot store will open at The Outlet Shoppes at Fremont on Thursday, Oct. 29. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 3 p.m.

Aeropostale is known for its line of chic apparel for teens and young adults and is a specialty retailer of casual apparel and accessories. Stand in three states at once

Usually it takes many hours to visit three states in one day, but here in Northern Indiana Lakes Country, you can stand in three states at the same time!

You can find the above marker, which is approximately a foot tall, on County Road 1000 East, between county roads 300 North and 400 North. It's about a mile and a half south of State Road 120. This rock indicates where the eastern boundary of Indiana, the southern-most boundary of Michigan and the northwest corner of Ohio meet.

This wasn't the original boundary, though. On State Road 120 there's a marker with the following description: "Indiana admitted by U.S. Congress as nineteenth state 1816. Enabling Act moved northern boundary ten miles north of southernmost tip of Lake Michigan providing direct access to the lake. Boundary first surveyed 1817 by William Harris. Boundary disputes with Michigan and Ohio continued until Michigan statehood 1837. Enabling Act of 1816 established Indiana's northern boundary (3 miles north of here) as a line "drawn through a point ten miles north of the southern extreme of Lake Michigan."

Gallery exhibition will feature local faces

"We Are Angola," a gallery exhibition at Jitterbug Photography in downtown Angola, will feature approximately 60 photographs of 100 people from Angola and the surrounding area.

The motivation for the show stemmed from Jitterbug's window cleaner David, according to Jitterbug Photography owner Barbara Knights-Hale. "The idea was to portray David and others in a studio setting to highlight their roles in the community," she said. "We found a greater reward once we started the dialog with our subjects. Their stories took on meaning; it allowed us to live their lives," Knights-Hale said.

Roxanne Fogel of Jitterbug Photography said, "The recognition of community allows us to realize its strengths, but more importantly, its individuality."

The exhibit is open to the public Sunday, Oct. 25 from 1 to 4 p.m. There is a private, invitation-only event set for Saturday, Oct. 24.

Buck Lake Ranch will become a haunted "Ghost Town" the last two weekends in October.

The 101 Lakes Kiwanis club is sponsoring the indoor walk-through "Ghost Town." Organizers advise children should be at least six years old to attend, due to the nature of the event.

Grocery store mogul to speak at Trine

Dr. Ralph Ketner, a Tri-State University alumnus and co-founder of Food Lion, a 1,300-store chain in the mid-Atlantic and southeastern U.S., will kick off Trine University's 2009-2010 Distinguished Speaker series Friday, Oct. 2.

The presentation is part of the university's Homecoming weekend celebrating 125 years in higher education.

Ketner founded Food Town, later to become known as Food Lion, in Salisbury, N.C. in 1957. He came to Trine, then known as Tri-State College and later Tri-State University, to attend school in 1937 at the age of 17. Orphaned by his parents' deaths during the Great Depression, he nonetheless possessed what he described in his book "Five Fast Pennies" as a different attitude and point of view. "I saw problems as opportunities in disguise. I saw a lemon and made lemonade. I started thinking before starting to work. I never had ambitious goals for myself, but have always done my very best on every job," he said.

He will intersperse his demonstration of mathematics skills with vignettes from his life with one goal in mind, as he states in the book: "To encourage our young people to dream and dream big!"

Martial arts tournament headed to Angola

The Breeden YMCA in Angola will host one of the nation's largest martial arts championships on Saturday, Nov. 7.

"This is the first time an event of this magnitude has ever been attempted in northeast Indiana," said Steven Franz, who teaches karate and judo at the Breeden YMCA. "Through the support of member schools in the United States National Martial Arts Allliance, we are looking at anywhere from 300 to 500 of the best competitors in the region attempting to earn the titles that day."

Angola celebrates Fallfest

Kick off autumn at the annual Fallfest in downtown Angola, Sept. 26 and 27. There will be plenty of food, fun and entertainment the entire weekend.

A Civil War re-enactment will be held at Commons Park, six blocks east of Angola. On Friday, a kick-off party for adults will be held at the Timber's tent, while Bonafide will play from 8 p.m. to midnight.

The annual Kiwanis pancake breakfast starts the day off Saturday, followed by the Delta Chi 5K Dash for Cancer. Musical entertainment includes Pokagon Pitchpipers, Mike Conley with Chris Dodds, George Damron and Buffalo Ridge, Triple Dawg Dare and the Romine Brothers.

RISE to the Occasion

The skies above Pokagon State Park-and the waters of Lake James-will be filled with seaplanes on Sunday, Sept. 20, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The Indiana Seaplane Pilots Association sponsors the annual 'splash-in' at the park. View dozens of planes at the Potawatomi Inn beach. Come by land ($5 per Indiana car and $7 out-of-state car) or via your boat.

On Sunday, a different breed of boat will take to the waters of Lake James.

The Untied Way and Breeden YMCA are hosting a Cardboard Regatta at 1 p.m. in front of the Potawatomi Inn beach at Pokagon State Park on Sept. 13. No foam, no nails and no wood allowed-just your imagination, plus some cardboard and tape.

Awards will be given for the fastest time and the 'most spectacular sinking.' In addition, judge's and people's choice awards will be handed out. For more information, contact the Steuben County United Way at (260) 665-6196.

If you're looking to spend the weekend in Northern Indiana Lakes Country, there is a limited supply of rooms available Friday, Sept. 4 and Sunday, Sept. 6 at the Potawatomi Inn inside Pokagon State Park. Other local hotels have limited openings also.

Up for a Treasure Hunt?

I remember reading Treasure Island as a kid and being totally captivated by the idea of buried treasure. How many pirates have stashed their treasures and never returned to retrieve them? Could I still find one of those uninhabited islands and a buried chest still concealing a trove of jewels and gold?

Years have passed and I’ve grown older, but I still love a good treasure hunt. I have given up on the strongbox of gold, but now I simply enjoy the hunt. You can get in on the hunt, too and you can do it right here in Steuben County! Geocaching is my mode of treasure hunting. According to the official website of this new, highly popular hobby, geocaching.com, “Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online.”

All you need is a basic GPS device and a sense of adventure. Of the nearly 900,000 registered geocaches hidden worldwide, over 420 of the hidden treasures are within 25 miles of Angola. Crooked, Silver, Golden and Jimmerson lakes are the locations of geocaches. Pokagon State Park, downtown Fremont, and Wild Winds Buffalo Preserve also hold treasures. It's great fun to seek out a little treasure that someone else has hidden… all the while, discovering the best treasure of all, Steuben County!

A Perfect Day

What a crazy summer we're having! Today it is 62 degrees and raining. The rest of the week looks the same. We can grouch and complain or we can embrace it. I say "let's embrace it"! There is plenty to do in Steuben County on a rainy day.

One of my favorite things to do to start my rainy day fun is eat at Sutton's Deli right on the square. John makes an awesome egg wrap. I like the spinach wrap with eggs, feta cheese, onions, broccoli, mushrooms and bacon. If you can dream it up, John can probably make it. Eat whatever your heart desires and John can make it. Only your imagination holds you back. Top it off with a steamy cup of dark coffee and we're in heaven.

Once you've leisurely enjoyed our downtown deli, walk over to Calico's and Collectibles where each item is unique and treasured. I especially enjoy Tracy's Christmas room where it's holiday season year around. Tracy and her daughter Libby are personable and have been in the area their entire lives so feel free to ask questions.

Once I've perused to my heart's content, I would continue around the downtown circle and stroll over to The Bent Fork and then next door to Pineapple and Chairies. Trish, the owner/manager of The Bent Fork is an artist and her bent for the unusual shows in her eclectic tastes. Right next door is a tiny but enjoyable boutique that makes "shabby chic" come to life! Pineapple and Chairies will delight every taste.

Once I've spent several hours shopping downtown at our other antique shops and quaint boutiques, I would flop in a soft comfortable chair at The Coachlight Coffee Shop and sip my favorite 'low carb mocha'. A perfect day in downtown Angola.

Get Fit!

It happens to the best of us. Every Jan. 1 we discover our holiday gorging has taken us to a place we are not proud of. We then find ourselves making resolutions to 'lose weight and get fit'. We either dig out our free weights and dust off our treadmill or we hit the gym at some great fitness places such as CURVES, ANYTIME FITNESS, CLUB FITNESS or the YMCA.

Then summer hits and the kids get out of school. Suddenly our exercise routines and healthy eating habits get thrown to the wayside. We don't want to spend time indoors during the summer so our evening trips to the ice cream shop, hours of sitting in a beach chair and long car rides on our yearly family vacation only add to our increasing 'girth' and here we go again.

Fortunately, Angola is full of places to add fitness to our trip.

Nancy Honeytree in Concert-Buck Lake Ranch

Saturday, Aug. 15 at Buck Lake Ranch, 'Nancy Honeytree', the first lady of contemporary Christian music, will be performing.

According to honeytree.org, "singer/songwriter, Nancy Honeytree is a pioneer in the field of contemporary Christian music. One of the few female solo artists to emerge from the Jesus Movement, Honeytree's sensitive songs once earned her the nickname the "First Lady of Jesus Music." The bossa nova style "Clean Before My Lord" and the rocking "Rattle Me, Shake Me" became theme songs to Christians in the turbulent 70's.

Honeytree is still on the cutting edge with the emphasis of her concert ministry shifting to missions. She continues to play a variety of unplugged folk and rock music, accompanying herself with classical guitar. Grateful to have been a part of the Christian growth of many folks who were converted during the Jesus Movement, Honeytree's ministry stays "evergreen" as she challenges today's pioneers of the faith to keep pressing onward to their own frontiers. "

The concert begins at 7 p.m. and a free will ofering will be taken. Buck Lake Ranch is two miles west of Angola at 2705 W. Buck Lake Rd. Coming from Angola traveling west, turn right at Gerald Lett Ave. (County Road 200 West). Did you know there are many varieties of plants and berries that are edible, from wild brush, to trees and even many plants? Knowing what is edible flora and fauna will be the topic of "An Evening with Edible Plants and Flowers" at the Carnegie Public Library of Steuben County. Bring your curiosity and, of course, your taste buds for an entertaining and amazing evening of 'grazing'! The scheduled event is Aug. 24 at 6:30 p.m. The evening will be presented by "The Garden Gals," Master Gardeners Bonnie Snyder and Marty Diller.

To further tantalize your taste buds is our local Farmers Market. Each Saturday from 8-12 anywhere from 12-20 vendors spread a table with the finest of local produce. You will find everything from tomatoes to blackberries, home baked items to fresh honey, trail mix to wood crafts. A normal Saturday at the Farmers Market will see upward of 600 people so you'll want to get their early for the best 'picks'. The Farmers Market sets up each week one block south of the downtown square on Wayne Street.

And last but not least is our local organic market "Nature's Cornucopia", 1801 N. Wayne St., owned by Naturopathic Doctor Susan Lovell. In recent months, Susan has added a scrumptious organic deli, "The Red Radish" to her store where, from 11-2, you can order wraps, soup, organic coffee and smoothies, just to name a few. Nature's Cornucopia houses a grand selection of herbs, vitamins, whole and organic foods and much more.

In an age where eating 'healthy' has come to the forefront of our minds, Steuben County is certainly staying up with the times. See you at the Market on Saturday-I am heading straight for the blueberries!

One of the many things I love about living in Angola are the events that happen in the downtown area. We all enjoy the beginnings of any celebration as we watch each different quadrant of the downtown square begin to be blocked off , people darting around the circle setting up barricades and then all the activity begins.

Sidewalk sales are an annual event that continues to grow with shopping, a cruise-in, shopping, and a band, shopping and wine-tasting. Did I say "shopping?"

Saturday has all kinds of children's activities beginning at 9 a.m. Caricatures, inflatable activity centers, art projects and more will be available in the downtown area for your child's amusement. Also featured are a dance performance and free dance lessons from Tricia's School of Dance. Storytellers for the kids include Lou Ann Homan and Merry Moo the clown.

Tantalize your Senses

Steuben County is the place to delight your senses this weekend. Look, smell, taste-starting with your basic senses and expanding from there is the best way to get the full experience of Wine Tasting by Gay's Hops-N-Schnapps on Friday, Aug. 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. From there, on Saturday Aug. 8 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., keep your senses engaged by using your sense of sight to star gaze at Pokagon State Park.

Friday, join other wine connoisseurs at Sutton's Deli for an evening of outstanding Washington state wines and hors d'oeuvres. Washington is the second largest wine-producing state, after California. The cost is $25 per person and all proceeds go to the Steuben Community Foundation. 30 select wines will be featured for your tasting enjoyment. Saturday, gather with other star gazers to enjoy the wonders of our solar system. You can spend almost all night under the stars for Pokagon State Park's 22nd annual Star Spectacular. According to the Herald Republican, activities begin at 8 p.m. where attendees can examine and learn to use equipment until 9:30 p.m. Star and planet viewing takes place from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. From 1 to 2 a.m. participants will be thrilled to marvel at the heavens when the Perseid meteor shower begins. There could be as many as 30 to 50 "shooting stars" in one hour. Activities will take place on the lawn at the CCC shelter. There is no fee for the star gazing; however, park fees are $5 per vehicle for Indiana residents and $7 per vehicle for non-residents. Long pants, binoculars, insect repellent, lawn chairs and/or blankets are recommended.

It's hard to believe but we are heading into August, which means the beginning of school and the end of summer. How can that be?

My kids are grown now but a common statement during any spring, fall or summer vacation was the whining comment, "Mom, I'm bored!" Of course, my response was always, "How can you be bored on a beautiful day like today" which usually got a roll of the eyes as their answer back to me.

Summer break and rainy days all can have the kids saying "I'm bored." This all-too-familiar phrase sends many parents scrambling for ways to stimulate, entertain or occupy their kids.

Mexico is Coming to Hamilton

According to the Hamilton News, Hamilton residents will soon be able to experience Mexico right at their back door. The Acapulco Mexican Grill, formerly Pier 32, plans to open for business in the next couple of weeks.

Todd and Ashley Sutton and Dan and Joice Smith purchased Pier 32 a few weeks ago at auction and have become good friends with Roberto Soto and his brothers, owner of four other Acapulco Grills.

Jose Canuto will be managing the business. Canuto is a brother-in-law to Soto and has worked 10 years at their restaurants in Fort Wayne along with other help from his family. "We love this business," said Soto, according to the Hamilton News. "We were born to do this!"

The Acapulco Grill will be open in two to two and one half weeks. Be watching.
